The Grimsel pass

The Grimsel pass, 2165 m above sea level, is one of the well known Alpine passes of Switzerland. The Grimsel pass is a link between the upper valley of the river Rhone and the upper valley of the river Aar (German : Aare). The upper valley of the Aar is also called Haslital. The Grimsel pass is also a link between the canton Valais (German : Wallis) and the canton Bern, more precisely the Bernese Oberland (German : Berner Oberland).

The source of the river Aar, the main tributary of the river Rhine, is located in the Grimsel massif, just west of the Grimsel pass.

The lake Toten at the Grimsel pass
The lake Toten (German : Totensee) at the Grimsel pass, literally the lake of the dead, still partially frozen in early June. The lake got this name because invading soldiers have allegedly been driven into the lake by the people of the canton Valais.
